Lighting Basics: Read the Label, Then Write the Brief

A useful lighting brief connects product information to a real place and activity. Start by separating the quantities on the label, then check where the light goes, what it looks like and how the complete product will be installed and controlled.

Know which question each quantity answers

Quantity What it describes
Lumens Light output, not electrical consumption.
Watts Power, not a direct measure of the light on your desk.
Lux Light incident on a particular surface per unit area.
Colour temperature The appearance of white light, not its output or room temperature.

Read the conditions beside the headline

A measurement without distance, settings or the relevant product variant may not support a fair comparison. Colour appearance and colour rendering are also different concepts. Do not let a high output or colour count stand in for checking the appearance of objects and the actual task surface.

Check the complete installation

Identify the correct fitting, power arrangements and any separate base, gateway or controller. A decorative panel expansion is not a standalone light, and a complete ceiling fitting is not installed like a plug-in table lamp. Use documentation for the actual SKU rather than a generic product category.

Write a short, testable brief

Name the surface or feature, the user’s position, the required control and the installation constraints. Compare options against those points, then inspect exposed sources and reflections from the normal viewing position. Keep advanced effects optional until the basic lighting job works.
